Lead Gen - To DIY or not to DIY?

I have a black lab - Maggie.

I love her dearly but the corner by my door has become home to her doggy paraphernalia.  A disorganized mess of collars, leads, poop bags, and floaty beach toys.

So I went to IKEA - full of enthusiasm, ready to transform my entrance into a decluttered zone of tranquility.  A quick, easy, affordable solution.  Or so I thought…

The experience was anything but tranquil. 

Round 1:  I missed the shelving units the first time around, they were hidden by some oversized dog beds.

Round 2:  I found the shelves. (How did that bed end up in my cart?!)

Round 3:  The trip for a $38 shelf cost me $357 - (Maggie NEEDS a poofy bed, and the utility cart can hold her stuff). So much for a cheap solution.

Round 4:  My plan was to assemble the shelves when I got home, but the Allen key was missing, the instructions were confusing, and no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t get the edges to line up straight. 

What I had thought was an easy task became hampered by lack of time, tools, and motivation.

Doing it myself seemed like a good idea at the time, but the reality turned out to be stressful and took far more time and effort than imagined.  It seems flatpack furniture and DIY lead generation solutions might have something in common.

DIY lead generation solutions are tempting - with low-cost subscriptions and the ability to create content and build it yourself, but monthly costs add up and understanding how to design and manage a marketing campaign is probably not your area of expertise.

The DIY build process is often complicated and laborious, and there is minimal support.  Plus, if you don't know what you are doing, it's hard to know if you are doing it right.

And the end result always looks a little… well… kludgy.

DIY solutions might seem like the cheaper or easier option. But if you don’t have the time, skills, or motivation it will cost you in the long run.
